Thought For The Day

6 Hour Church

Make the announcement at your Church that on a Sunday soon there will be a 6 (six) hour Bible reading followed by praise, prayer, and teaching (helping one to understand what was read during the 6 [six] hours). Then ask the people to make a commitment to attend by signing a form that allows them to opt out only if they are hospitalized.

The resultant crowd will be somewhere around one or two, and you will get several texts or e-mails that indicate if that is a harbinger of things to come, they will never be back.

It happened in Nehemiah. Ezra read for six hours (see Nehemiah 8:1ff), and that was followed by prayer and praise and teaching until all had come to understand what it was that God was saying in the “Law of Moses.” (Genesis – Deuteronomy) And that probably took the rest of the day. . .or more just to get started on the understanding.

Many folks nowadays are concerned when the clock reaches noon, and many of them didn’t arrive till shortly after 11am to start with. That is a normal process in most gatherings of Faith these days, and we tend to think little about it.

It demonstrates the reality that we expect much more of God than we are willing for Him to expect of us. He asked, in His Word, that we set aside one day (24 hours) out of the seven we are given each week, to honor Him, and find ourselves focusing on His design, will, purpose, and goals for becoming Christlike in our wants and ways. That is not to say that we should not have a focus on that task every day, to one degree or another, but. . .one day, just for Him.

It is easy to believe that God has no problem with us needing to watch the Cowboys, or the Giants, or the 49’s, or the Rams (etc. for those I missed)) on Sunday afternoon. We think little about the fact that most “Churches” have done away with everything that gathers the people except for Worship on Sunday morning for an hour or two.

So what is my suggestion? Ask God what He thinks! If you have trouble getting the answer from Him, perhaps it is because we have abandon the 24 hour plan. Shoot, we have abandon almost everything that has to do with a full time commitment to follow Him, His Word, and His leading.

And the saddest thing of all, for me, is that I had to use the word “we” in the previous sentence.

Just saying.
