Thought For The Day

Anger

Are you angry? New polls have concluded that many – very many – Americans are angry. The reasons behind that anger are legion. Much of it has to do with politics, and many are angry because they have an expectation that everything is supposed to be getting better rather than worse.

Few things in the life of a significant number of people are better. The economy is not so good, the Nation feels unsafe, Government seems hapless, prices (except for gasoline – at the moment) keep rising while product grows smaller. Those who should be actively improving the general welfare of the United States are mired in ignorance, apathy, and except for “feathering their own nest,” lethargy.

Even the Church of Jesus Christ is often at odds with itself. Individuals are angry about a multitude of issues and often believe no one in leadership is listening. Anger begets anger.

Angry people are poor communicators and even worse listeners. Their empathy is foreshortened, and they have trouble imagining the other’s point of view. It makes people less healthy, and when both parties are angry, fewer are likely to find middle ground. If the only way people feel they will be heard is when they are angry, then our public discourse will be an arena for shouting past one another. (TIME)

This analysis appears on point from my perspective.

I have a vested interest in our Nation. I have a super-vested interest in the Church. We need to acknowledge that at times anger is righteous, appropriate and useful. Mostly, however, anger is a sin. If you are angry unrighteously, you need to get past it. NOW! (Ephesians 4:26)

Thank God for being in the forgiveness business. We need to be in that business as well. And, as my beloved Momma used to say, “If the shoe fits, wear it!
