Thought For The Day

Be The Exception

There is an Audi Automobile commercial playing on TV that show a young boy obviously do something that is against the rules at a swimming pool. I will leave it with your imagination if you have not seen the commercial, but it ends with him being picked up by his mother. She comments approvingly to him, “So you did it again? Be the exception.” The advertisement goes on to infer that the advertised automobile is “breaking all the rules.”

It is unfortunate that the ad has it backwards. Most everyone is breaking a rule or three, and the reality is that what our World  needs is a multitude of people who are the exception in that they refuse to break the rules.

Moms and Dads have rules. Teachers have rules. Employers have rules. Our local, State and National Government has rules. Even God has rules – for example – the rules (Laws) of Nature – gravity, entropy, motion, etc. Learning to live inside those rules is mandatory if we are to survive. When the lowest common denominator is that everyone does what they wish, we are finished as a society. I can help but wonder how far away that reality is.

“Rules are made to be broken” is not the finest wisdom available. One of the best places to discover some of the “rules” is to read the Proverbs of Solomon. It’s in the Bible – just after Psalms. Check it out.
