Can A Believer Support Trump?

Some writers for major periodicals don’t seem to understand why “Christians” (who are sometimes Believers) support Donald Trump for President of the United States. Alex Altman and Elizabeth Dias, in a TIME article dated January 21, 2016, made a few interesting statements.

The only example I can give that might help clear up the matter is my own thinking regarding Faith. I have not yet decided on my position regarding Mr. Trump, but I am confident I understand why he is ahead in the polls.

As an Evangelical, I would be much more likely to support Donald Trump, who doesn’t appear to be a Believer, over, let’s say, Barak Obama (or anyone who plans to continue his policies), and it has little or nothing to do with their “faith.” It is clear to me that those who are not related to God by the New Birth experience, and thus continue in an unGodly worldview and a natural propensity toward disobedience to God’s design and and purpose, are at least honest in their operation. On the other hand, those who claim to be “Christian” and even “Believers,” and yet choose to be disobedient to “their” Lord an Master, and violate a significant number of clear mandates from Scripture, are quite dishonest in their operation. I will always lean toward the honesty, as will, I believe, most Believers.

Let me give my three examples using statements from the TIME article entitled, “Why Trump Is Winning Over Christian Conservatives.”

[Trump is] leading with values voters, even if he doesn’t always share their values. I am sure the values Trump is speaking about regarding “Making America Great Again” resonate with all true Patriots. While President Obama speaks of like values he has spent the last seven years attempting  to “fundamentally” destroy the very values “Christians” hold dear.

“To my ear, [Trump] simply is not one of them. He is obviously unfamiliar with the Bible and does not speak in the vocabulary of most evangelicals I know.” Mr Trump, to my knowledge, has never claimed to be an “evangelical.” Why would he be familiar with Scripture? On the other hand, President Obama uses Scripture, claims to be a “Christian” and yet seems to have no concept of the Truth of Scripture, nor does he even practice the simple Biblical principle of corporate Worship with other “Christians.”

[Trump] doesn’t even pretend to have a sophisticated position on questions of faith,” says Stephen White, fellow in the Catholic Studies program at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. I would never, knowing Mr. Trump’s background, expect him to have a “sophisticated position” on faith, and thank God he does not seem to “pretend” about anything. Our President, however, does pretend to have a “position on faith,” and yet supports a host of positions that are exactly opposite those proclaimed by the Author and Finisher of Faith. (Need examples? Abortion, Homosexuality, Same-Sex Marriage, God’s absolutely clear position on “other faiths,” and individual commitment to His Bride, the Church.)

The Truth is Mr. Trump speaks as if he lloves America, supports our values, approves our way of life, and is willing to fight for our National well-being.  President Obama appears to be moving in another direction. Those who would continue his policies and programs bring fear to many if not most Americans. One does not have to be a “Christian” to turn America back toward God. One only has to get America back on the path envisioned by our Founding Fathers, and it may very well be that the American people will, by-in-large, return to God on their own. Mr. Trump speaks as if he will attempt to do exactly that. Even a Believer can support that!

Seemingly his most demonstrated trait is that he seems to love our Country, That, maybe is best definition of what a Conservative “IS.”
