Care For One Another

There is a lot missing in the 21st century Church. One need only review the Scripture regarding the work of God’s people within the confines of the family to be reminded. We are seldom quick, but often cognizant, of the need to reach out to those outside the family, and we design elaborate programs of evangelism and outreach. Meanwhile, many who are part of the Body of Christ, and members of a local congregation, languish, well within touching distance of each of us as we go about our busy lives.

Paul spoke of such in the following passage:

. . .so that there would be no division in the body, but that the members would have the same concern for each other. So if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. (1 Corinthians 12:25ff)

How often are we made aware that part of our family is “suffering,” perhaps ill, or having lost a family member to death, or there is a discovery of serious disease, divorce, job loss, . . . ? The list goes on and on. Yet we remain glued to our busy lives without ever stopping to “care.” No visit, no card or letter, no call, no text, no demonstration of concern for the hurting, struggling, dying folks who are part of our own Church family.

Perhaps we think it is not our job. We are confident “someone” will handle it. We are apt to just forget, because we are busy, too busy, too frazzled to care.

Shame on us! His Word is clear and definitive, yet we continue seemingly without even a twinge of regret that “concern,” “care,” “llove” has ceased to be the focus of our attention toward one another. We have “moved on” to “other things” —  lesser things in my thinking.

God forbid we would not care enough to get a shoulder under one another’s load.

I am not sure of the exact solution, nor really the problem. Is it our busyness that creates this lack of care? Are we purely subject to our culture? Unless we PURPOSELY jump or are accidentally slung ofF the “Merry go Round,” I am not sure we can do anything; as we are subject to our “lives.” The solution is hard BECAUSE we have so many “parachutes” (Insurance, 911, etc) that are totally disconnected from the Church, thus disconnecting us from each other….I am trying to figure out how to jump :).
