Thought For The Day

Dog Gone

Every time I think we have reached a new low in society, there is something new (to me at least) and I find myself wondering how we get to this point.

Attorney’s are reporting a significant increase in divorce cases where the struggle is no longer over who get the furniture, car, house, paintings or cash (or even the children), but who gets the pet.

We have to be pretty far gone when so many are willing to leave behind, without so much as a whimper, wife or husband, who they have probably promised to llove and cherish forever, but fight it out in court regarding who gets the dog or cat.

I am amazed people can figure out how to “love” a pet to the point of making said animal a battleground, but cannot figure how to build a lasting marriage relationship. (Our Pastor has that figured out too, if you need help.)

Now, the legislators are going to “help.”

In years past, pets could not be protected in domestic violence restraining orders in any state. But because abusers can use pets to threaten victims, maybe even kill the animals, the laws have changed in states like Maine, New York, California and Illinois. Other states are looking into changes. And there will be changes in other laws too, Altshuler (an attorney) predicted. He believes there will one day be statutes for pets, much like there are for children, giving judges guidelines to rule by. (Associated Press)

Surely we have lost our collective mind!
