Thought For The Day

Excellent Learners

As the Preacher spoke last night during our Wednesday evening Bible Study, I spent a little time watching the people in the room. There were young couples, and older folks, a small but enthusiastic crowd.

As always seems to be the case, most of the people were looking at the notes they were taking. Attention was rapt. But that is not a “praise” for the Preacher, but rather an understanding of the desire of the folks in that room to hear and learn the Truth revealed from God’s Word. Those who weren’t taking notes were not distracted by the children playing in the back of the room or around the tables where they sat. It seemed as if the time flew by, and was gone well before the folks were wanting to stop listening.

Wouldn’t it be great if all of God’s people were keen to know, quick to learn, eager to grow toward maturity in “the Faith?” Unfortunately there are a significant number of people whose commitment to Scripture is mediocre at best. Most people in most Churches have forsaken Wednesday evening Bible Study and Prayer as a time of great importance (if the leadership has not beaten them to it).

There is no mandate in Scripture for a Wednesday evening Bible Study, but we have come a long way from the practice of the “early Church” to meet daily. Perhaps if we had kept that policy alive we would not be living in a World where Christ is little known to most, and a Nation (United States) on the brink of collapse.
