Thought For The Day

Faith and Science

I guess it is the belief of many that we are supposed to pick a side, Faith or Science, and build our intellect around one or the other. I don’t think that is correct. Science is a wonderful, rich source of information and intellectualism, but it falls short of being able to explain a lot of what is discovered. Faith on the other hand, is faith, after all, but based on the indisputable Truth of God’s Word, and the genuine intellectual understanding of the simple principle that cannot be disputed, nothing comes from nothing.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church, during his time here this past week, has talked a good bit about climate change, and our response to it. I wish, instead, he had the knowledge to speak about “grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.” That, of course, is not a part of his theology.

One of his predecessors did make a valuable statement. It was an incorrect evaluation of Truth, but can lead us closer to the Truth. Never has there been a time when we needed that more.

In 1965, Pope Pius VI foreshadowed Francis, when, in a United Nations address, he too spoke about the destructibility of the world at the hands of humanity. “The real danger comes from man,” he said, “who has at his disposal ever more powerful instruments that are as well fitted to bring about ruin as they are to achieve lofty conquests.” (TIME)

Only God can destroy the work of His hands (the Universe and all that exists), but it is indeed hastened, I believe, by the “destructibility of the world at the hands of humanity.” Pius spoke of weapons of war and such, but we know that what brings the wrath of God is disobedience. We (mankind) fuel that wrath with the powerful instruments of hatred, abortion, elevation of “other gods,” homosexuality, hetro-sexual immorality, divisiveness in the Church of Jesus Christ, and the attempt to purge society of genuine faith in Jehovah God, just to name a few.

We live in a World on the edge of Judgment. We hasten it with our wicked, deceitful, foolish hearts. (See Jeremiah 17:9)
