Thought For The Day

Fencing

Back in November I wrote a note about “mending fences.” Since I am returning to the farm today to get back to work on the fences, I thought about one more things that I believe is important.

One has to know the reason one would build a fence in the first place. I see vast fields of cotton, hay, wheat, oats,  potatoes etc., when I drive long distances through farm country that have no fences. I have come to believe that those farmers don’t need fences because they never worry that someone is going to stop in and “work” the fields. Nor need they be concerned that the cotton. . .or whatever, is going to wander off and get lost. It will be there when harvest time comes.

Not so with cows, horses, exotics, pigs, etc. They will wander and get lost, or killed on the roadways, or distress your neighbor while consuming his crop. A good wire fence will eliminate those problems.

So then. . .why have you built mental fences in your life? Is it to keep you own feelings, care, and concern from others? Or is it that you don’t want others to “meddle” in your life. It may very well be one or the other. I am amazed at the Believers who “stick to themselves” never taking time to get to know even their closest neighbor, or share the Gospel with anyone. On the other hand, some folks avoid the gathering (Church) because they would just as soon no one knew the inner workings of their life.

There are times when our wire fences serve us well. Mine will soon be able to keep “things” in, and, continue to keep out those who damage and destroy the wildlife population, and hopefully keep out some of the unwanted wildlife (feral hogs) as well.

But, I want to delete those mental fences in my life that separate me from the people of God and the people who need to know Him. I want to be welcome in their life as they both are in mine. I hope you feel that way as well.
