Thought For The Day

Fire and the Future

Billowing black smoke and homes set ablaze show the size and strength of three massive wildfires burning across California. Together, the Camp, Woolsey and Hill fires have burned 86,000 acres and killed at least five people—and are continuing to spread. (TIME)

If there would be anyone to write it, these might be the first headlines, to be followed with unimaginable destruction, when the Earth will be spoken out of existence as the elements melt with a fervent heat –  The Day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness as you wait for and earnestly desire the coming of the day of God. (2 Peter 3:10)

I would postulate that it is not too soon to begin a serious determination about this business of “holy conduct and Godliness,” in your life. We have a tendency to believe this “Day of the Lord” is distant. We have no assurance that is true. These massive fires will pale into insignificance when THAT day comes.

If you knew a fire like one of these in California was coming to your neighborhood tomorrow, you would make preparations (if you are wise), evacuate, and take every precaution possible to preserve your family and friends. Rest assured the words of Peter (Word of God) will come to pass. If not tomorrow, one day soon, or some later date (see 2 Corinthians 6:2)  for which it will be too late for you to be prepared.

The destruction of Earth will be complete. Where will you spend the rest of your life (eternity)?
