Thought For The Day

Flaming Gorge

John Wesley Powell decided to name this Green River canyon “Flaming Gorge.” We are told it had to do with the redness of the soils. As my bride and I traveled through the Gorge today it was easy to see what he had in mind. The lake, built in the 60’s, is one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever seen. We found (it wasn’t lost) a place called Red Rock Canyon overlook (which is in the Gorge) and I was awed by the beauty of God’s Earth.

I laugh sometimes when I read all the hype about billions of years ago when the whole Earth was flat (no, I mean there were no great canyons) and the rivers (like the Green) carved the Gorge. (You know the Colorado carved Grand Canyon). It took millions of years, according to the “flat Earth” people. Of course the Gorge was a bit deeper (from top to bottom) before the dam was built. The lake is 436 feet deep now.

Maybe the flood (remember Noah) carved the canyons when the water receded from the land to the seas. I don’t know. What I do know is that all this incredible beauty is the work of God in a matter of days (or months, if you go with the flood theory). God makes it clear in his words to Job:

Where were you when I established the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding.
Who fixed its dimensions? Certainly you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
What supports its foundations?
Or who laid its cornerstone
while the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy. . .

That passage is from Job 38, beginning in verse 4. Let me suggest that you read the wonderful passage all the way to the end of God’s words to Job (Chapter 40, verse 2)  Let it sink in. Then join me in finding the awesome beauty of His handiwork.
