Thought For The Day

Growing Concern

I have believed in America (read: United States of America) the entirety of my life. One would hope that the Nation of one’s birth and where one is likely to spend the entirety of one’s life, would always be a place where one could live in peace, safety, and prosperity. If I were an un-redeemed individual, I would be afraid – very afraid. Since I know the outcome of the future, and that my life here and in eternity is in the hands of my Heavenly Father, I am only “growing concerned.”

The current Executive Administration of the United States is hard at work making sure that their war policy is clear and settled. The White House on Tuesday defended targeted assassinations of Americans thought to consort overseas with terrorists as “necessary,” “ethical” and “wise,” as the Obama administration faced fresh questions about its sharply expanded drone war. This document, which we must assume is designed to codify the policy, is, for me at least, a very scary development. I can’t help but wonder when any American, anywhere, could be tagged for extermination. I don’t seem to be the only one concerned.

“This is a profoundly disturbing document, and it’s hard to believe that it was produced in a democracy built on a system of checks and balances,” said Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU’s National Security Project. “It summarizes in cold legal terms a stunning overreach of executive authority—the claimed power to declare Americans a threat and kill them far from a recognized battlefield and without any judicial involvement before or after the fact.” (IBID.)
