Thought For The Day

Highway to Hell

Sometimes things just come together!

While waiting (a couple of hours) for a funeral to start, I saw a post on Facebook that was an older lady on Britain’s Got Talent singing AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” I have never really heard (have heard of) this song before, so I took the time to take a look at the lyrics:

Livin’ easy
Livin’ free
Season ticket on a one way ride
Askin’ nothin’
Leave me be
Takin’ everythin’ in my stride
Don’t need reason
Don’t need rhyme
Ain’t nothin’ that I’d rather do
Goin’ down
Party time
My friends are gonna be there too.

Well, enough of that. How often do folks hear this song and either don’t care, or don’t listen, to what it is saying. Scripture tells us that the majority of people in this World are actually on this highway to Hell:

“Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many (emphasis mine) who go through it. Matthew 7:13

The narrow gate (Jesus Christ) is found by a significantly smaller group, and that is the pathway to Life eternal, and Life abundant.

I don’t know the person being eulogized today in this place. I am here to show the video of his life and make the sound system work properly. But I can’t help but wonder. . .how many times do we attend the funeral, or spend time with a friend or family member, who is on the highway to Hell. We don’t use that word much in the Church anymore. It offends people who are blithely wandering on never knowing the road ends in separation from God forever.

Maybe that ought to be the song we play in Church just before the message of grace, redemption, salvation, conversion, is delivered. Perhaps a wake-up call is in order.

Oh, I know! We don’t want to offend. We don’t want to scare people off. But as an old evangelist used to say – “Where are  you going to scare them off to? Hell number 2!
