Thought For The Day

History

Isn’t there a adage that says “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. … Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors are destined to repeat them.” (George Santayana) The first part of that saying has been attributed to many including Winston Churchill, Edmund Burke, and others. Whoever said it first, it is true, and will be whoever says it last.

There is an attempt to whitewash the War Between the States from our history. A minuscule number of people are committed to removing from the public sector (and they will oppose the private sector as well) every statue (or other memorial) of that War’s Confederacy. Never mind that there were atrocities on both sides (take time to study General Sherman’s “march to the sea”), and great Americans on both sides before the War and after.

We would be better served if we removed from our society those who are haters, violent, destructive, vandalizing, and ignorant. Most of that can be accomplished with education. Without education (which includes the acceptance of the value of historical examples), the division and destruction of America will continue unabated.

I find it interesting that God did not leave the Scriptures short on characters who were haters, violent, destructive and ignorant. The Apostle Paul is a good example. Once he was educated beyond the limits of the society of his day (read about that in Acts 9), he became one of the greatest men in history.

Wise people understand this issue is not about historical relevancy, but an agenda that wages war on America. The vast majority of older Americans have learned much from the War between the States, and understand that another such war will destroy America completely. Some appear to be attempting to start that war, in part because they are uneducated regarding the value of history.

Don’t be misled. Monuments to history (e.g. the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington, D. C.) help us to understand there are things that must never be repeated. Can you imagine WW III? You best be ready for Heaven!
