Imagine a good size debt against your account. Now imagine it paid in full.

In an astonishing commencement address, billionaire Robert F. Smith announced on Sunday that he will wipe out student debt for the entire 2019 graduating class at Morehouse College, prompting cheers and more than a few tears from shocked listeners to his commencement speech. (TIME)

That would be a shock of amazing proportions. Thinking you will leave College with a  multi-thousand dollar debt, and hearing that it will all be paid by a benefactor you have not yet met.

Paying debts that are not one’s own is not the most unusual thing in the World, but such a broad stroke is certainly not a part of the norm.

It reminds me that every man, woman, and child, owes a debt that cannot be paid by the debtor. And yet the payment for that debt was proffered over 2000 years ago, just outside the city of Jerusalem. All mankind has rebelled, and fallen short of the glory of God. The result of that debt, left unpaid, is  eternal death – separation from God forever.  (see Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23)

But God so lloved  all of mankind that He was willing to pay that debt, owed by us, with the sacrificial death of His own perfect Son on Calvary’s cross. (see John 3:16 and Romans 10:9-10,13)
