Thought For The Day

Lava Lesson

Lava. It just keeps coming. There is no way to know when it will stop flowing, but the reality is that there is more where this supply is coming from. It is only by the providence of God that the Ring of Fire (Pacific Rim) has not erupted through all of it’s volcanos at the same time. That might be a part of how this Earth will one day come to an end.

I have walked over cooled lava, wandered through “lava tubes,” and watched the smoke drift from a few volcanos over the years. Suffice it to say that the whole of that problem is quite significant in our future. Last time I was on Hilo (Hawaii’s largest island) I was amazed at the beauty of God’s creation, but one cannot forget that the beauty sits atop what we are seeing daily during this particular eruption. I am glad I am not there. It is a dangerous place.

Watching the lava got me to thinking about the “rivers of living water” (John 7:37-39) that Jesus said would flow out of those who are redeemed and committed to the operation of God’s Spirit within their innermost being. Like the lava, there is no visible end to the power and victory afforded to those who reach toward complete maturity of faith. Just the opposite of the Hawaii lava flow is seen in comparison. Whereas the lava bring damage, destruction and often death, the “rivers of living water” bring spiritual and physical health and healing, peace, joy, comfort, and on and on.

As the lava “springs up” from the Earth’s core, be reminded the “rivers of living water” spring up in those who belong to Christ.
