Thought For The Day

Living Well. . .and Long

I was reading through some old notes when I found this. I think  it is time to hear it again. Perhaps she is still with us. . .but probably not.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph reported today (April 10, 2010) on a really senior citizen.

“Eunice G. Sanborn’s life has touched three centuries. President Grover Cleveland was serving his second term when she was born. Only 31 years had passed since the end of the Civil War. Twenty presidents have taken the oath of office during her lifetime. She turned 2 years old during the Spanish-American War. From the discovery of X-rays to the invention of microwave ovens and iPhones, Ms. Sanborn has seen it all. Now, the Jacksonville resident has the distinction of having seen more than any other living person in the United States. At almost 114, Ms. Sanborn became the country’s oldest person at 4 a.m. Tuesday.”
Asked about her life, she replied, “My secret is my savior.” While I don’t think that is a secret, she did say something that may shed a little more light on how to live. And if it does not translate into “long” it will translate into “better.” “I love everything about my life,”she said in a telephone interview. Too often we fill our lives with things we don’t llove, and allow ourselves to focus on things that make our existence less than all it can be. Being surrounded by negative people, involving our self in actions that damage and hurt us and others, and failing to practice the disciplines the Scripture clearly teaches, allows us to spend time as if it were a commodity which can afford wasted hours.
Learn to llove what you do. Learn to llove the people around you and spend little time with those you cannot llove. Fill your days with obedience to Truth, think about and pursue good things, right things, holy things, and while your life may not last over a century, it will be a better life, a more fulfilled life, and one that is pleasing to “the Savior.”
