Original Sin

I just read and re-read the manuscript of President Obama’s eulogy of Clementa Pinckney. While some of the rhetoric did not make a lot of sense to me, especially the first paragraph or two, I could not get past the following line without some wondering what on Earth he was talking about. Here is the quote from the manuscript I read online where the President spoke about the shooter in the tragic deaths:

. . .an act that he presumed would deepen divisions that trace back to our nation’s original sin.”

I keep asking myself what “sin” he is talking about. Our Nation, made of of millions of citizen, has certainly know a lot of sin. The reality is that every person born on this Earth is a sinner because Adam’s (the first man on Earth) sin has been inherited by all. That sin, the sin of disobedience, affects every person, and the effects of it are clear and plain in this 21st Century. I know of nothing in the Scripture, nor in the history of our once great Nation that could or would be classified as “our original sin.”

I am confident the President’s use of the word “grace,” multiple times, clearly demonstrated his lack of understanding regarding God’s grace, and that is certainly understandable given his history of Church attendance.

I don’t mean to cast aspersions on his eulogy or person, but I find it hard to believe that he continues to demonstrate such a vast ignorance regarding so many thing about which he speaks.

He did utilize one of my favorite songs in the eulogy, “Amazing Grace.” I wish he had used his vast resources to let someone sing it who would have had the ability to carry the tune.

But that’s just me. Always searching for TRUTH, and lloving great music performed with excellence.
