Thought For The Day

Stop!

In the early hours after the tragic shooting of children in Connecticut, I heard the authorities beg (literally) the “press” to leave the families of those slain to their privacy. But the “media” was having none of it. And it continues, and continues, and I suppose, there are people out there who hang on every word, every story, ever ounce of pathos that can be wrung from this tragedy.

While it is an almost incredible horror, it is one that is played out every day all over our Nation and World. Parents are informed that their child, whether an infant or a teen, has not survived. I would argue that their pain is not lessened because their loss is not shared by multiple deaths, and that they could rightly wonder why there is no “National mourning” for their loss.

I wish I could believe that the “media” is genuinely concerned about the people rather than their own “ratings.” Perhaps some of the parents and grand-parents in this tragedy are seeking an outlet to “tell their story.” But most of the parents with whom I have walked this path are not.

All over the country there are “notes” and “threats” and “copycat” promises. (As I write this note, my local School District is in “lock-down.”) What causes that? Surely not the constant “hype.”

In all of this conversation, there is more confusion than wisdom; more blather than TRUTH; more foolishness than intellectual honesty. Our National political leadership talks about everything except a return to “the God of our Fathers.”

Maybe we should give that a whirl.
