Thought For The Day

Thankful

Christmas lights are up. . .and going up. I am starting to see them in places all around. It seems our society is now moving directly from Halloween to Christmas – and that is because there is little profit to be made from Thanksgiving. I am not sure how many people still “give thanks.” I know there is still the obligatory meal in lots of places. There are “thanksgiving” cards. Churches often have a Thanksgiving lunch/dinner together. But what about Thanksgiving, i.e. giving thanks?

And what do we have to give thanks for, anyway? Everything seems to be going downhill right now. Things are hot politically. Everyone who waits for such things is awaiting the stock market crash correction. Hope for the future seems in short supply. Money is getting harder to come by. Television programming and movies are, in large part, either filthy or boring or silly or beyond intelligent understanding. All cars  look alike (remember the 1959 Coupe Deville Cadillac?). It’s getting to the point it costs more to camp in a National Park than to stay at the Best Western. The streets are not safe. Taxes are skyrocketing (did you know there is a “medical tax” on bows, arrows, and fishing rods?).

Maybe it is time to skip Thanksgiving.  Unless, of course, you want to thank a United States of American Veteran (November 11th) for the freedoms won on battlefields around the World.  You might want to thank a Teacher that you can read and write. How about some thanks for the sweet ladies (and occasional hero-type guy who is willing to help) who keep your messy child busy for a couple of hours on Sunday? Maybe you might even thank your Pastor for telling the TRUTH (if indeed he does). Thank the check-out person at the grocery for getting it right (at least most of the time). Thank a waitress at the Waffle House with a larger than normal tip (they all seem to need it). One might even thank the mail man for delivering in the rain, hail, wind (however that Post Office saying goes). And hey, have you thought about some thanks toward God who provided grace, hope, llove, the sacrificial Lamb sufficient for YOUR sin, the revealed Word of Truth, and for keeping those places where you gather to intertwine your life with other Believers in business.

And just in case I forget – You are reading this, and I want to say THANKS! And should you decide to comment (that makes my day), THANKS.
