Thought For The Day

Thinking. . .

A few days ago I was sitting in front of a fire place made out of 500 tons of rhyolite. That’s a volcanic rock and it was used to create the four sided fire place in the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone NP. The structure is incredible. . .and it has been there for so long (built in 1903-4). I am amazed that it has endured so many fires (within itself and within the Park that have destroyed so many other things), a 7+ earthquake, and millions of visitors. Some things were just made to last.

One of those (things that are made to last) is the Church of Jesus Christ. While it (the Church) will endure to the end of the age, there are multitudes of those people who comprise it who seem to “fall away.” There are not many things easier to do than “fall away” from the gathered Body of Christ. Everything in life seems to be a distraction. We are pulled in so many directions in this life, and the reality is that a faithful commitment to the Church, of which we are a vital part, does not rank high on our priority list.

The Apostle Peter called each Believer a “living stone” (see 1 Peter 2:5). We are, he said,  “being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Just as every stone is mandatory for that incredible fireplace in the Old Faithful Inn, so we too are mandatory in the “building” of the Church if it is to carry out and ultimately complete that which is acceptable to God.

How are you doing in that process?
