Thought For The Day

Value

Sometimes I wonder about the value of certain things. For example, what value is there in sitting in front of the TV for three or four programs (7, 7:30, 8, 9),  watching the news at 10 and then catching 15 minutes of the Tonight Show before falling asleep? Or what value is there in grabbing a burger and a movie on a Friday evening? Is there added value in spending the evening with friends playing a game of Scrabble, or Canasta?

Of course there is value in all of these things. I am not sure I want to do any one of them all the time, but there is some good stuff on TV, and an evening with friends is always pleasant. There are a few good movies and everyone needs four or five hamburgers each week.

The most valuable thing I do, however is spend a couple of hours (or 3+ taking in Sunday morning and evening) at Church. First I hear the Word of God clearly and accurately proclaimed (yes, I go to one of those Churches), I hear and participate in singing the songs and hymns of the Faith, I am ministered to by those who are carrying out their God-given gifts, and building genuine friendships that result in long-term care and the ability to care long-term. There is about the community of genuine believers a sustenance that cannot be found elsewhere. Nothing offers more return on investment from every perspective including financial benefit (no theatre manager is offering to return your input in multiplicity), llove received in porportion, and well beyond, llove given, and future benefits that includes the glory of infinite gain.

Yet, so many folks, even those who claim to be believers, seldom see the Church as more than a second or third option. All of the activities listed above (and a thousand other things) precede our propensity to get ourselves to Church on a regular and continuing basis.

Value has become more and more important in a world of shrinking possibilities. This might be one you want to consider more seriously.
