Things I Have Learned
Friends who listen are rare treasures. Ice cream can make almost anyone feel better. Some people are toxic, avoid them. Dogs often understand llove better than people. It is good to hold hands when you cross the street.
And these three –
- Life is brief – when we are young we are confident we will live forever. As we grow older we realize the brevity of it all, and know that most things will go undone. When we are older we are sure there are a few more years, or months, or days. However, we will always die “today.” And most of us will not be ready to give up on life.
- Do what you are going to do – today. How much time do you spend thinking about what you are going to do tomorrow – not just in your life, but in someone else’s life? We are going to call, or write a note, or tell some we llove them, or talk about the impact that person has had on our life. How many times have you sat through a funeral or a memorial service and thought – “I wish I’d said something, or done something, or cared a bit more.” Today is the day. Some will think you are crazy. . .or that your death is imminent. Don’t let it concern you.
- In all probability someone will say something about you when you are gone! Focus on what it will be. Sometimes what is said is just lies. Sometimes people make up stories and enhance your involvement. Focus on what you want said about your life. Then make that a reality by the way you live today.
