Thought For The Day

Only Family Really Cares

Another needless death – but, it will go mostly unnoticed except by family and a few friends. Everyone close will “make nice” but, really care? Believe me, not really.

An 18-year-old Dallas high school student set to graduate later this month died from apparent alcohol poisoning at a downtown Dallas hotel following a prom after-party Saturday night. cwelch@star-telegram.com

Hey, if you are old enough to drink – you are old enough to die. No one is willing to actually say that, but it’s all too true. We’ll let most of them get killed on the highway. We’ll say we really care – but we don’t.

There’s a push – a group – that is promoting a “smoke-free” Texas. They “really care” (??) about people dying from smoking and the ubiquitous second-hand smoke. They are lobbying to get smoking outlawed anywhere in public – maybe more.

Smoking will probably eventually kill you. Mostly it is a slow, painful, unable to breathe, kind of death. Alcohol is much quicker – though it certainly has its share of slowly dying victims. Funny, no one is talking about a “alcohol-free” Texas. Naturally, we have an excuse – “It’s not possible.” Right. I get it. I wonder if the young man above lived in an alcohol free home? An alcohol free school? An alcohol free neighborhood?

Who cares?

(Editor’s note: Christian West really hates alcohol and the damage it inflicts on people, homes, society, etc. You’ll have to forgive his vitriol. He’s kind of “out of touch” with reality.)
