Not Quite As Popular
I wish “Church attendance” had less to do with promotion – and more to do with Truth. I am constantly wondering if promotion, in and of itself, is a major, minor, or “no” problem at all.
I wanted to ask the preacher at our Church what he thought on the subject, but he wouldn’t take my call.
I got a brochure in the mail from a Church that is going to give away, to someone who comes, a car. A car? There was no indication what kind of car. In fact, maybe we should do that. I have a car that needs to be given away to some unsuspecting Church attender. I was talking with a friend who said another Church in our area routinely gives away (to the teens – so they will encourage their parents to take them. . .and supposedly stay for Worship) Six Flags tickets and Ranger and Cowboy tickets.
I hear people talking about who has the best coffee bar and the freshest doughnuts and some Churches have in-house food and drink – for before or after (No, not like ‘dinner on the grounds’) so folks won’t be inconvenienced with having to stop at McDonald’s on the way to and from.
All of that is OK, I guess (once again – I couldn’t get my call through to the resident genius at our Church). But. . .shouldn’t people be coming to Church because they are going to get a heaping helpin’ of God’s Word? Shouldn’t they be coming just because (as Believers) they are commanded to do so? Isn’t there something to be said for eating at home? (1 Corinthians 11:17ff) I know, I know, that’s not quite as popular.
Anyway, before I get carried away here, I just wanted to let you know that if I am late (or don’t show at all) this coming Sunday, it’s because I am going to check out that “car” thing. If you’ve seen my ride, you’ll understand my need.
