Culturally Relevant

I keep reading about “theologians” (or something less) who want to make the Scripture “culturally relevant.” As I study the Word of God, and because I live in and am fairly observant of our culture, I just don’t understand where they are trying to go. Does “making the Scripture relevant” mean I need to find in it, and proclaim, something that “looks and acts” like 21st century America?

Well, let me try this – “When they refused to acknowledge God, He abandoned them to their evil minds and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, fighting, deception, malicious behaviour, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. they are forever inventing new ways of sinning and are disobedient to their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, and are heartless and unforgiving.” Romans 1:28-31 NLB (I think that last sentence may be a pretty “cultural” look at the present political operation in our Country.)

Most people I know are not purposefully intent on being like those described in these verses, and yet, has it ever been more prevalent and pervasive in “our society?”

The TRUTH is, nothing, absolutely nothing, is as relevant as God’s Word. It is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago, and as it was when “In the beginning God created. . .” (Genesis 1:1) was written.

Consequently, God’s amazing llove and grace are culturally relevant. They are current and accessible every day. He has “new mercies” fresh every morning. What our society needs is not something new – but something as old as Truth itself.
