Thought For The Day

Core Beliefs

When it comes to politics, all  Presidential candidates are “Christian.” I am not sure I understand that – since our society is far, very far, from those TRUTHS which make us “like Christ” (the actual meaning of the word). Most people, maybe everyone to one degree or another, want to believe what they believe, do what they do, and still call themselves Christians. I suppose a person who wanted to run for President of the United States, and proclaimed him/her self a Wiccan, or a Buddhist, or an atheist, would find little “public” support.

We need to remind ourselves that politicians lie (don’t we all). But the dirty little secret is that “Christians” lie. What we say does not always match what we do, and what we do often fails to conform to the stringent demands of God’s Word, which is the “bible” (also called the Bible) for Believers.

I found the following report interesting –

Brad Atkins, the president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, stressed that many evangelicals consider issues such as abortion “major” concerns, and that candidates who have murky histories on positions like that will have trouble persuading religious voters that they’re sincere. “There was a sense early in our nation’s history that we were one nation under God,” Atkins said. “Sadly, the older our country has gotten, the more we’ve gotten away from those core beliefs.” (ABC News)

He is right. But, in my “humble” opinion, it doesn’t go nearly far enough. Whatever we have “gotten away from,” this IS a Nation under God. This is a world under God. “Evangelicals” can believe, think, feel, anyway they want about “abortion” (to stay with the quote – even though I could substitute a multitude of words) but God declares that those murders (which is the sacrifice of the life of a baby on the altar of expediency) will always bring His judgment.

Frankly, our “core beliefs” may be excellent or totally immoral, our understanding may be weak or non-existent, our actions may be acceptable or rebellious – it is only the TRUTH of what God has revealed in His Word and taught us by His Spirit for which we (both as individuals and as a Nation) will one day answer.

I fear there are few remaining to come to repentance. (see 2 Peter 3:9)
