Thought For The Day

Losing Who We Were

I asked my Preacher if I could go on a personal rant today. Fortunately he was asleep at his desk and did not answer.

Notice at the top of this blog is its reason for existence – “. . .a conversation about what really matters.” It’s not just about spiritual things, but other things as well, though the focus is mostly spiritual.

We are losing some things (among many) I think are important. Our language, at least the way it is spoken and written, is deteriorating rapidly. I am sure it is because our schools are on a slippery slope educationally. It bothers me that spelling and correct usage of grammar, abbreviations, and conjunctions don’t count anymore. Double subjects are spoken by the most erudite among us, and what we used to think was uncouth is now common. I know I make my fair share (perhaps more) of mistakes in all these areas, but at least I am trying to get it right. I am especially concerned about my use of  “commas.”

I’ll give you a few examples – this is a “rant,” remember?

Me and Tom are going to the store. How about,  Tom and I are going. . .

The Cowboys, they are playing quite poorly these days. How about, The Cowboys are playing quite poorly. . .

we’ re from Tx. How about, TX . . . and shouldn’t that sentence start with a capital letter?

We’re, like, ya know, like concerned about our, ya know, English language skills. How about, Yeah!

I was listening to the President of the University of Texas (Austin) a few days ago after a bomb scare on campus. He sounded like a “hick” who had never before spoken in public. I don’t think that is mean, rather, it’s scary.

Some will say, “It doesn’t matter.” I beg to differ. Imagine if God said, “I mean, like, ya know, me and Jesus luv you.”
