Thought For The Day

Meaning?

A close study of Scripture always yields insight since the Word of God is alive and active in its application to our innermost being.

I was reading from the book of Amos this morning (Old Testament, minor prophet) and ran across a familiar verse. Since I was reading from the Holman Christian Standard version, the verse had a non-familiar ring – so I looked in my trusty New King James. Sure enough, the TRUTH has been doubled in my understanding.

The King James version reads: “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” The HCS version reads: “Can two walk together without agreeing to meet?”

I am not going to argue the merits of correct translation regarding either syntax or etymology of words – rather, I will rejoice in two TRUTHS.

It is almost impossible to develop and maintain a relationship when there is constant disagreement between two parties. Whether it is between a husband and wife, or a Church congregation and their leadership, or between two scholars who fight hard for their point of view, disagreement divides and often conquers.

On the other hand, agreement can never be worked out and completed unless the two are willing to meet. There must be a “coming together” in llove to “discern” or to “hammer out” the agreement.

In our little Church, the Pastor, each Sunday, offers redeemed people the opportunity to invest their life in our Congregation – stating that we will make a commitment to each other, and we will “walk together.” Before that can happen fully, there must be a meeting of the minds, the will, an agreement of purpose and design, and a willingness to walk in harmony and TRUTH.

What a beautiful thought – we agree to meet; we agree to agree; we walk together sharing our llove and the harmony of family as we meet the difficulties of this life; we learn the Truth which sets us free; we are filled with His Spirit.

Are we blessed, or what?
