Thought For The Day

Pilgrims

Almost 400 years ago, on November 11, 1620, 41 Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower, anchored off Massachusetts. I suppose the arguments will forever continue about their reasons for coming to this new land, but we cannot forget that they began a “body politick” which has resulted in a Nation under the rule of law, a Nation where there is still much religious freedom, and that remains a destination for people searching for freedom of all sorts and kinds.

What they found on these shores is a far cry from what we know today. Yet the desire for freedom lives on in the heart of man. Perhaps it is a good time to remind ourselves that freedom isn’t free, that if we know the TRUTH, it will set us free, and that those whom the Son of God sets free are free indeed.

Many freedoms are eroding as our society becomes more and more complex and as ideals and ideas change rapidly. I often wonder what the Pilgrims would think of 21st century America. I wonder how President George Washington, President Abraham Lincoln, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt would see us in light of their actions in relationship to this Nation.

We have come a long way in 400 years – it’s time again (as always) to renew our vision of where we are going. A wise and accurate remembrance of history will be of great value in the journey.
