Competing Statements
How does one separate politics from morality and the desire for power from Truth? Politicians are a lot like Preachers in my opinion – I can’t figure out how there can be so many varieties.
Texas is a focal point right now in the debate on limited/unlimited abortions. The Senate and House, in special session, will make some news either way they vote (probably next week). There are two statements that struck me this morning while reading reports about the issue. The first, which quotes Texas Governor Rick Perry, is a support statement for the bills (likely, SB 1 and HB 1 in the special session). The second quotes Wendy Davis, a Texas Senator, who in the last session conducted an 11 hour filibuster opposing the Senate bill.
“It’s just unfortunate that she hasn’t learned from her own example that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential and that every life matters,” Perry said, alluding to Davis in a speech before a national Right to Life conference last Thursday.
Asked to respond to Perry’s comment, Davis says “it’s very unfortunate and sad that people’s personal health and safety are at risk for his political purposes.”
I don’t know what Perry’s “political purposes” are, but the bill, as I understand it, calls for an end to abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy (twenty weeks too late, Mr. Perry), upgrading abortions clinics to “surgical center” status, and requiring Physicians (I use the term loosely) to establish admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of their clinic. That appears to be an attempt to help ensure the “personal health and safety” of those women who seek abortions. I always wonder how our society continually moves toward having ZERO concern regarding the “personal health and safety” of unborn humans.
Abortion is a moral issue. According to Scripture and the laws of the United States of America, abortion is nothing less than first degree, premeditated, capital murder. A Judge sent a man to prison for 10 years (a recent case in Dallas) for killing a cat, while our society murders our human offspring by the millions each year.
God cannot be appeased with our attempts to “temper” the issue. It must be stopped!
