Thought For The Day

A Heroic, Yet Typical Mom

We are so often beset in the “news” by parents who hurt, abuse, abandon, and murder their children, it is refreshing to hear about a mom who “did what it took” to make sure her kids were safe.

In a tornado outbreak, with her house being destroyed, one mom literally covered her children with her own body to protect them.

“I remember the whole thing,” she said. “I stayed conscious the whole time. I couldn’t afford [to pass out]. They needed me. They had to have me, so I had to figure out what to do. And my son is a hero. He went to get help.” Both her legs were smashed. She’d also suffered a punctured lung. Her children, however, were unscathed. (ABC News)

While what she did is heroic, in another sense it is typical of moms. Everyday, in multitudes of actions and llove, millions of moms care for, provide for, sacrifice for, and do whatever it takes to get children from birth to adulthood with a minimum of damage.

It is not the “good” mothers who are in short supply. It is those rare cases we hear so much about when children are hurt (and, don’t misunderstand – there are waaaaaay to many of them) which are “hyped” by the media. Everyday there are moms doing what moms do, and their is no limit to their willingness to do so.

Let’s celebrate them! Thanks Stephanie Decker, for your heroic, yet in one degree or another, typical example.
