Thought For The Day

Banning Dangerous Stuff

I see people doing all sorts of dangerous stuff in cars. The fact is, some folks who drive should confine their trips to the boundaries of their driveway.

The NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) is making a new recommendation regarding cell phones and cars according to Newsweek

The National Safety Transportation Board, whose job it is to improve the safety of all kinds of travel, doesn’t have the power to regulate any kind of driving practice. But it’s now urging the states to adopt a ban on cell phones, including hands-free gizmos like headsets or Bluetooth.

I think maybe it is a good idea. Of course it is not about to happen. It’s like trying to ban alcohol, cigarettes, and guns – Americans just won’t stand for it. And I like that too. We don’t need to give up our personal liberty for a little safety (sounds kinda like a quote from someone famous).

But I am taking the thought to heart. I am not going to “text” or “e-mail” while I am driving. I don’t ever play games or such (I know drivers who do), so no worry there. I am going to have to keep taking those calls – but I may just start pulling off the road to do so.

It reminds me of the list of hymns someone said goes along with speeding – you know, at eighty miles per hour you need to be singing “Nearer My God to Thee.” Obviously you can’t be singing and texting at the same time – (no you can not), but if you could, you might want to learn a verse and a half of “Lord, I’m Coming Home.”
