Bible Completed
In the category of symbolism over substance (a concept I am convinced was created and is sustained by our Government), I am glad to know “the Bible,” in its hand-drawn version, is completed and on display.
The Benedictine monks at St. John’s Abbey and St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., commissioned the Bible in 1998 to celebrate the beginning of a new millennium. The first words were written on Ash Wednesday 2000 and finished on May 9, 2011. (Yahoo News online)
I admit that calligraphy is a beautiful art, and taking twelve or thirteen years to write it is quite an accomplishment. However, it is one of those endeavors which causes me to ask – what exactly is the purpose?
The value of the written Word of God is that it can be passed from hand to hand and generation to generation. If, however, we do not read it, understand it (a supernatural operation performed by the Spirit of God), and apply it’s Truth to our daily path, walking in its light, making obedience to its precepts the ultimate goal of the action, what then is the reason behind the task?
The Word of God is not an object of art, a symbol of man’s religious nature, or great literature to be archived for future generations. It is the revelation of God to man, clearly defining man’s purpose and goal, demonstrating God’s llove and grace in reconciling mankind to Himself, and providing the immutable Truth designed to be a “lamp to our feet, a light to our path.” (Psalm 119:105)
