Bricks and Mortar
I’ve been watching the building of additional space at the place where I worship. This morning I was observing one of the brick laying guys who was working on a corner where the bricks are turned in a different way to form a ledge below the windows. The corner called for some intricate work – cutting two brick quarters to 45 degree angles and matching them together with another regular quarter on the back side to make the ledge right. He did it quickly and correctly – undoubtedly this is not his first job.
I have learned a lot over the past years of living in this World and worshipping in the Church of Jesus Christ. I have come to more clearly understand the Word of God because of some great teachers, mentors, pastors, friends, and because of God’s Spirit within me illuminating the Truth.
So – I will ask you to excuse me when I grow impatient with those who have just graduated from somewhere, or taken their first position on a Church staff, or begun some ministry oriented para-church organization, who want to tell people like me that we have it all, or at least most of it, wrong.
Why are you wearing a suit to Church when most others want it to be “casual Friday?” Why do you insist on following the “letter of the Truth” when we have, of necessity, modified our message to “make the Truth fit with contemporary thinking?” Why are you still using words like “sin,” “lost,” “slave,” “obedience,” “Truth,” “Lordship,” when our society has moved past an appreciation for such arcane language?
I am not sure which words I am supposed to use – let’s see (in the same order); “mistake,” “pre-Christian,” “servant,” “attempting,” “concept,” “friendship.” There now, is that better for you?
Now don’t get me wrong, this is not a rant. I am not upset or angry. It’s just that I couldn’t think of anything else to write. . .sorta.
