Christian Speech Tournament
Given the opportunity to be a Judge in a speech tournament was something I could not turn down. I participated as a contestant so many time during my High School and College years.
These young people are part of the National “homeschool” family, and it was quite interesting to listen to them. There were, as always, a variety of speech types, and I was particularly interested in those working in “Apologetics.”
Choosing a topic one can defend, or support, or propose can be interesting. I listened as young men and women gave “reasoned arguments in justification of something,” i.e. a Scriptural principle or action required to be obedient.
My personal favorite was a young man whose speech was based on a “religious quote” that “Heaven is a state of mind.” And while he argued the Truth well, utilizing Scripture and quotes from Godly men, there was one point he did not (and should not have addressed in this environment) argue. Before one can convince another that Heaven is real, or Christ has prepared a place for those who trust Him, or there is a clear path to Heaven, and a narrow gate (Christ) through which men must enter, one has to strike up a conversation with another who is open to the Gospel. Being competent at Apologetics is wonderful, but if we are not “sharing” our faith, knowledge, passion, and confidence with those who so desperately need to hear, we are missing the point.
When is the last time you talked about your “faith” in Christ with someone near you? Jesus said we would be witnesses wherever we go in this World. Are you?
Well, “git ‘er done.”
