Thought For The Day

Driving America Down

“There was a time in America. . .”

I wonder if that will be the beginning of some final narrative I will share with my grandsons before I depart for Heaven. I want to have confidence that our great Nation (once ‘greater’ I think) will recover from the ignorance and apathy, selfishness and greed, an absolute focus on money and power, rampant hatred and division. . .but I am not sure it will.

Some of the many symptoms of our dying culture are encapsulated in stories and quotes that make one wonder how “dumb” can we be:

A group of protesters attack a Men’s Warehouse – because that is the business of George Zimmer, who “guarantees you will like how you look,” and murdered a black man in Florida. Or people who make racially charged statements – “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon. When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids.” (Associated Press) The poor man who said that must be continually and consistently distressed with the constant death of so many black Americans murdered every day in every part of America. Then, there are the really bright lights who help spread ‘good’ news: The four-term mayor of Washington, D.C., Marion Barry, has now brought his healing touch to the proceedings. The Zimmerman verdict was “awful,” he said, another example of “institutionalized racism.” But look to Marion to find a bright side. (U Express)

There are other voices. Erick Erickson of RedState.com said, From my vantage point, the best dialogue to transcend the divide is that of the saving Gospel that heals all wounds. Much of the societal decay we have now stems from decades of government trying and failing to feed the body with liberals trying and failing to feed the soul. There is, however, only one lasting food the soul can truly digest and only God can provide it.

Certainly that is beginning to get to the heart of the matter. Now, to get the Church on track. . . .
