Games and Life
Since the beginning of public speaking and writing, speakers and writers have been comparing life with competitive games. Jennifer Engel with the Star-Telegram said the following in a recent column –
Pay attention, kids. This applies to Game 4 (Mavs/Heat NBA Finals) and life. You do not take on seemingly impossible tasks because the odds are good of succeeding. If they were, the word impossible would not apply. You take them on because the other option is quitting. . . .
Well kids, you can be sure life is going to come at you with the full force of the Enemy in his attempt to wreck, torment, and ultimately destroy your life. If it is not drugs, or sex, or bank robbery, and every other kind of immoral and illegal behavior, it will be a robbing you of your commitment to succeeding in school and jobs and marriage. You will either discover a path to success, or you will quit trying and “go with the flow.” Most adults can speak to these issues – some from success and others from failure.
Many feel it is impossible for a young person to remain pure and clean through the teen years. I am sure the Scripture argues with that belief, but none-the-less, I am confident I don’t know many, if any, who have done so. What I do know is that it cannot be done without the support and involvement of other Believers who understand how success comes – from mom and dad, to teachers and friends. I also know that the best place to find those people is in the Church.
Unfortunately Church becomes a place we are least likely to llove. We’d rather sleep late, visit grandma, play a ball game, enjoy the lake, go for a bike ride, or just rest up for the coming week.
Life, however, is a “finals” game. There are only so many opportunities to give it our all. The Coach provides supernatural strength, the word “impossible” is not in His vocabulary, and we can always win. Or, we can remain foolishly non-resistant as the Enemy defeats us. It’s up to you! It always has been!
