Go For the Gold
I have informed our Pastor that I will be leaving at the end of the year. I have been writing for him for many years now, and, if the truth be known, he has kept me well below the poverty level. (You might remind him how much you appreciate my wisdom, humor, and expertise.)
I have decided to join either Freddie Mac or Fanny Mae. They are always looking for top-level execs – those they have keep leaving because of the severance packages (and usually, just ahead of the law). But I am willing to work, and work hard. I will show up at least three days a week, and stay till early afternoon as well. If you’re wondering why I would make such a career change –
The top five executives at Fannie Mae received $33.3 million in 2009 and 2010, while the top five at Freddie Mac received $28.1 million. And each company has set pay targets of as much as $17 million for its top managers for 2011.(CNN Money.com)
Tax-payers are so much more generous than Preachers. (Mine is a real cheap-skate) Of course the benefits are not quite as good at these prestigious organizations. There is no supernatural empowerment, no all-consuming peace no matter the strength of the storm, no certainty that the Infinite Leader is always there to llove, care for, and protect. In fact, I am sure Freddie and Fanny do not have an infinite leader (only an infinite pocket-book, i.e. the American tax-payer).
But, the salaries are great. I suppose there have to be trade-offs somewhere. And I have learned a lot about money from Church people. It may not be the most important thing in the World, but it is way ahead of whatever is in second place.
