Thought For The Day

It’s Getting Cold Out There

Deep in the heart of East Texas it is getting cold, and is rumored to be moving downward fast in the next 48 hours. I understand that cold where I am is not cold at all compared to a lot of places here in our great Nation. It’s just that circumstances are a bit different. The word here is that we could see temperatures at or below zero. We are just not built for that kind of cold. Water lines will freeze and burst, electricity will go out, and those of us who don’t have gas (propane?) will not be able to “turn up the heat.” Fortunately I do have a wood-burning stove available, so all is not lost. I am hoping it is a colossal mistake, and the cold will head in a different direction (not yours, of course) and we won’t drop below. . .say 30 degrees.

It got me to thinking about cold hearts, spiritually speaking, and I am sure that is subject matter worth talking about. So many hearts are cold to the Gospel. People listen to others who have no idea the cost involved in failing to hear the Truth, and they either ignore the realities of life, or are confident that they can deal with the issues at a later date. One issue that cold hearts face is that we are not promised a later date. The Truth is “now is the time for salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2) and one is  living in great danger if 0ne is allowing a cold heart to think otherwise. The best day to deal with a cold (unredeemed) heart is today.

Another issues is the coldness that affects the hearts of Believers who refuse, refrain, or foolishly choose not to practice the disciplines of obedience to the revealed Truth of God’s design, llove, and provision for day to day life. Absence an application of Truth, frequently and purposely, freely available to all who believe, one is left to a coldness of heart that grieves our Father and damages or destroys one’s ability to live a life of joy, peace, comfort, and obedience. The Church of Jesus Christ is not without Believers who have grown cold-hearted and spiritually miserable. That is a far cry from the warmth of God’s Spirit at work. (see 1 Peter 1:6-9)

If and when it gets cold out there, I can build a big fire, and warm up in the glow. The Spirit of God is available to solve either one of the above “cold heart” issues. If you need help, just let me know. Stay warm now. . .
