Learning One’s Place
I never cease to be amazed by those people who come along occasionally in life who are going to “fix” everything. A few are so enamored of their perceived power and brilliance that they begin the attempt to move the whole world to their thought pattern, and remake everything and everyone in their image.
We can look over the history of the last few centuries and see some who have tried. The great Pharaohs of Egypt, The Caesar’s of Rome, Napoleon, Hitler, just to name a couple. Unfortunately there are still folks out there who fall into that pattern. Of course they are headed for failure. Anyone may possess power and influence for a period of time, but ultimately every one fails in the quest to be supreme.
Every once in a while I take time to read Chapters 38-41 of the book of Job (from the Bible). I am particularly fond of a couple of verses – “Who is this who obscures My counsel with ignorant words” (38:2), and “Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him? Let him who argues with God give an answer” (40:2).
I just can’t quite ever trust someone who “knows everything,” can “fix everything,” or the one who assumes that he has all the answers. Together, I repeat, together, we can do a lot of excellent and profitable things. But when one person or even a small group of people need no consultation with all the rest of us, especially from a spiritual perspective. . .well, I have some concerns.
But that’s just me. . . .
