Thought For The Day

Learning To Read

I llove marriage. It is one of God’s greatest gifts to mankind. Whenever I see articles or information regarding its definition or proposed changes which violate the revealed Word of God, I pay attention. I read the following information provided by D. Montgomery in the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram with some concern –

AUSTIN — Texans: Are you really married? Maybe not. Barbara Ann Radnofsky, a Houston lawyer . . .says that a 22-word clause in a 2005 constitutional amendment designed to ban gay marriages erroneously endangers the legal status of all marriages in the state. The amendment, approved by the Legislature and overwhelmingly ratified by voters, declares that “marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman.” But the trouble making phrase, as Radnofsky sees it, is Subsection B, which declares: “This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.”

According to this attorney, Ms. Radnosfsky, that would mean no marriage in Texas is legal. The current Attorney General of Texas defends the law, but fails to give as a reason for his position, the simple ability to read the language of our land. This subsection of the amendment says that marriage is a unique circumstance and that the State, nor any subdivision of the State can create or recognize a legal status that is identical or even similar to it. It certainly does not say that the State cannot legalize marriage.

I know some lawyers need extra work. If they are running for office (as is Ms. Radnosfsky) they need a “cause.” This one is simply dismissed by learning to read. Lawyers ought to be able to understand that.
