Thought For The Day

Paranoid

How many lives are damaged or wrecked by the thoughts and feelings that “someone is out to get me.” While a true psychological definition of the problem of paranoia leans toward a systematic thinking, we often use the word to a lesser standard of measurement. “Someone attempted to hurt me in one way or another, and/or, thwart my good intentions, today.”

I have come to believe that no one is actually “out to get me.” While some may disagree with my thinking, or stand against my actions, I have to recognize that the only one who is really “out to get me” is the Enemy. . .and he is a defeated foe. He has no power in my life, and no ability to counter my thinking or stop my actions (see Philippians 4:13).

So what can one do when one has that thinking or those feelings? Here is a short list (try it):

Pray for strength to understand and accept your position in Christ.

Practice the disciplines of llove toward everyone – no, everyone!

Recognize only the Enemy wants you to have hurt feelings and attitudes.

Accept the reality that it is highly unlikely that anyone is “out to get you,” understanding that you are probably not so important (an additional definition of paranoia) in their life that they will take the time necessary to do so.

So then, “pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall  short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble and by this many become defiled. . . . (Hebrews 12:14-15)
