Straight
It may be that my memory regarding Scripture is selective, and sometimes I don’t know why certain events bring to mind a Scripture passage, but it happens more frequently than one might imagine. I read in the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram these words regarding an automobile accident very near my home –
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — A Colleyville man was fatally injured Tuesday morning when he lost control of his car as it and another vehicle zigzagged through traffic on Boulevard 26, police said.
Boulevard 26 is a mostly “straight” road. Heaven only knows why anyone would be “zigzagging” through traffic, but the cost for such activity, in this case, was way too high.
I couldn’t help but think of all the folks who are zigzagging through life where indeed they ought to be moving straight forward. It was John the Baptist who is reported by the Gospel writer Luke to have said, “Prepare a pathway for the Lord’s coming! Make a straight road for Him. Fill in the valleys, and level the mountains and hills. Straighten the curves and smooth out the rough places. And then all people will see the salvation sent from God.”
I am certain we are courting disaster when we fail to find the “straight path” that God is on. It is too easy to lose one’s life while zigzagging among the perils of this world’s various dangers. Perhaps there was good reason for the activity reported in the newspaper, and if so, I will stand corrected. But there is no reason to miss the grace of God. It is straight in front of you!
