The Pen vs. The Sword
If I recall my literature correctly, it was in 1839 that Edward Bulwer-Lytton wrote the words – “The pen is mightier than the sword.” And recalling that adage that has become a staple over the years, I was wondering how a Church of fifty or so Believers in Gainsville, Florida, have made an impact that is reaching around the world. Perhaps it is the “pen” that ought to concern us, if indeed, such things as this quote from Associated Press in an article by Mitch Stacy comes to fruition –
“It is the duty of Muslims to react,” said Mohammad Mukhtar, a cleric and candidate for the Afghan parliament in the Sept. 18 election. “When their holy book Quran gets burned in public, then there is nothing left. If this happens, I think the first and most important reaction will be that wherever Americans are seen, they will be killed. No matter where they will be in the world they will be killed.”
If one single American dies as a result of this foolishness, I will hold the “pens” as accountable, maybe even more so, than the Preacher who is doing a foolish thing. Is Pastor Jones correct in his assessment of Islam? Yes. Is it past time to stand up to terroristic Islam and any other terrorism that would disturb the relative peace of American society, yes.
Burning copies of the Koran (yes, I know Quran is politically correct) won’t change a thing about the insidious work of the Evil One. Leading one follower of Islam to become a follower of Christ will save a life for eternity, and perhaps become part of a chain of events that will bring others to Truth and salvation. What it won’t do is get one on National TV or headlined around the World.
One thing is for dead sure – no matter how this current flap turns out, Jehovah God, Creator and Sustainer, Alpha and Omega, the God of llove and peace, will still be in control of this Universe and every creature who inhabits it.
