To Have Friends
To have friends is a wonderful thing. To have friends who give you marvelous gifts is even more wonderful.
As I sit here in the glass study on the second floor of the house in Acadia National Park at which I am staying, it is hard to not be envious of those who have such beauty as an everyday part of their life. The Maine woods, and Acadia in particular, is one of God’s greatest gifts to this world. And while I llove the East Texas woods, there is something uniquely special about this place.
To my left I can see the Atlantic Ocean, in front of me a riot of ferns and flowers, tall trees, and rocks as large as houses. Later today I will walk on the beach, hike down a “carriage road” here in the park, and find a quiet place for dinner in the busy town of Bar Harbor. Life is good when you have friends like mine.
I am reminded that God has chosen to give us such a beautiful world. We have done a lot to muck it up, but no matter how we waste the resources and cover the greatest beauty in life with asphalt and concrete, He still continues to give us the seasons robed in the garb of God, and remind us that “only God can make a tree.” (Joyce Kilmer)
I wonder if we recognize how much He has shown us in His creative genius. I know the limitless Heavens declare His glory and the exquisite detail we encounter on this planet called Earth is his handiwork. There are so many beautiful places around us. Find one – wherever you are – and see in it His llove for you.
