Trash and Treasure
“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” That’s the “old saying” isn’t it? I have spent a portion of the last couple of days helping some of our folks get things ready for the “SALE” of those items that we no longer want or need. I hesitate to call it a “garage sale,” because the stuff is not typical of those kind of sales.
When we moved out of our “annex” last year, we abandoned a lot of stuff. I have been absolutely surprised how much. The Preacher was reluctant to go over and look (much less help sort and stack) at all the things that we have decided we don’t need or use any more. Some of it is really good stuff – some, not so much. We’re going to attempt to sell it so that there will be a little money in a venture our Church calls “Lloving Hands,” where our folks reach out to help others who have a “little” need for “fixin’ and repairs.”
Since the Preacher told me we could sell anything we didn’t need, I am helping our folks get rid of everything from computers and printers, to barely worn baseball uniforms; folding chairs to microphones; book cases to desk units – all still in pretty good shape – considering.
I keep wishing we could do that more effectively with the things we don’t want and need in our daily Spiritual walk. Obviously (at least I hope it is obvious) God is ready to forgive us of our sin and rebellion, if we could just acknowledge that those things are no longer wanted or needed. Perhaps we could unload some anger or bitterness. Disposing of our willingness to gossip, to be lazy, to avoid Bible Study and prayer, to bypass the gathering of the Body on a regular basis, and such like, would go a long way toward renewing and refreshing our journey.
I think it is similar to abandoning our trash and attaining His treasure. God is so good at making that happen for us!
