Who’s Listening?
I can’t seem to help myself in comparing what’s going on in Church with what’s going on in Politics. There are so many good thoughts.
I started listening to the first Presidential Debate of 2012 on the radio as I left Bible Study at my Church for home. Once there, I slipped into my favorite chair in front of the TV. I had missed the first 30 minutes or so, but I continued to listen until my bride, who joined me about 9pm, asked if we could “talk about something else” at around 9:20. She talked, I listened, to her and the debate for the next 10 minutes or so (I am really good at multi-tasking – right?).
The point is, we were told at the end that about 50 million persons had watched/listened to the debate. This morning, the news I read had increased that number to 60 million. That means that out of our (USA) population of 314 million – most (I know a lot are children) people were not watching/listening. I am going to make the judgment that a significant number of those folks are people who really don’t know the import of the issues, or don’t care about the import of the issues, or have settled in their minds how they are going to vote, or that they are not going to vote. (I have already written off those who don’t know it’s an election year.)
Now – I am convinced that the same phenomenon occurs every Sunday morning in thousands of Churches all across our beloved America. A significant number of people are not listening – they are thinking about other things, work or vacation or problem in their life, texting, playing digital games, or exchanging e-mails with someone on the other side of the auditorium. Many have long ago made up their mind what, or how much, they are going to believe, and the message being disseminated is irrelevant to them.
Somehow I have this mindset that we can never know enough. We need to be vigilant constantly for what is TRUE and RIGHT. We need to hear everything we can about those who would LEAD us in America. Our Nation depends on it. We need to hear the Truth of God, constantly, clearly, accurately, because our LIFE, now and forever, depends on it.
Do you ever wonder who’s listening? I do!!
