Thought For The Day

Tax Due Day

It’s just too hard to let this pass. We’ve got a “tax” problem in this Country, and I am not sure we (our National Legislators) are doing anything about it – except arguing, and running for re-election.

Here’s a quote from an article from Associated Press:

More than half the nation’s tax revenue came from the top 10 percent of earners in 2007. More than 44 percent came from the top 5 percent.
Nearly half of U.S. households pay no income taxes.

Most of the conversation these days seems to be about those in the top 5 percent of wage-earners – who are, remember, paying almost half of all the taxes paid – and how we must “stick it to ’em” with even higher rates and elimination of any “breaks.”
Here’s my question: What if they decide not to pay taxes anymore? What if they put all their money in overseas accounts, move off-shore, close their businesses and retire in Antigua?
Won’t happen, you say? Maybe it is time we started talking seriously about a “flat tax” or a “sales tax.” Maybe everyone will lose their exemptions – then just watch your tax burden sky-rocket (except for those of you readers who are in the top 5 percent already, of course).
It’s a scary deal. I read about one “idiot” who thinks taxes ought to be voluntary – like that will make everyone want to pony up for our inflated, overspent, pork-barrel National budget.
The Church of Jesus Christ follows that plan – give what you want to give – and most of them struggle with having enough to regularly pay the bills. Fortunately their (our) Father is not about to be broke. Unfortunately, our Nation already is.
