Learning From Cows
Down at the farm we leased some grass to a cow person. Soon 25 head of heavy bred heifers were wandering the fields and valleys. They are good looking cows, Angus, and Angus/Brangus crosses.
Once they left the trailer that brought them they took off for the far reaches and I did not see them for a couple of days, except from a distance. If I approached them they ran the other way (like some people I know).
Yesterday, I decided to feed them (they are not my responsibility to feed) since they were standing around the barn looking hungry. I grabbed a couple of sacks of feed from the barn and walked toward them. They just stood there, looking like they would say “hurry up,” if they could. As I walked among them they barely noticed. They were intent on the feed – distracted by little else.
I am convinced that is what Church gatherings ought to be. There are many folks out there who are skittish when it comes to attending Church. They just need to be fed. When the Truth of God’s Word begins to sink into the heart and soul (read: innermost being) of an individual who is hungry for Truth, they soon become less and less “skittish” about being part of the family.
I suppose cows would come to a “cow party” if they knew what it was. Lots of places called Church are just a “good time happening” to keep the doors open. People don’t need more parties. They do need the strong “food” of God, clearly and accurately proclaimed, lots of llove and care, enthusiastic worship, and the clear presence of His Spirit. When that happens most of them will hang around.
That’s a good thing!!
